William Walsham How wrote this hymn which was first published in 1864. Known as the “poor man’s bishop,” How was an Anglican priest who served in positions of authority through southern England. He wrote a few other hymns along with being editor of Church Hymns, a hymnal from 1871.
The tune SINE NOMINE is attributed to Ralph Vaughan Williams, perhaps the most important composer of 20th century Britain. Its first appearance in 1906, however, was attributed to Anon. with harmony by Vaughn Williams.
